The courtly and dignified melodies and manageable phrases found in Timothy Johnson’s Ceremonial Procession invite young musicians to play with mature and controlled sound. Directors of beginning bands know that all music at this level must qualify as a learning experience as well as a performance vehicle. Timothy Johnson’s many years as a school band director are clearly evident in his careful use of ranges and rhythms, and the appropriately limited independence that is required of the players in this fine beginning band offering. There is plenty to learn as the students prepare this inspiring piece for concert or graduation.
