Description

In 1890, Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921) wrote an assortment of songs for a play written by Adelheid Wette, his sister, as a gift to her children. Spurred by his friend Richard Strauss, he took some musical ideas from this collection and created HANSEL AND GRETEL (HNSEL UND GRETEL), a full-length opera based on the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale. Completed in 1893, it received its first performance on December 23, 1893 at the Hoftheater in Weimar under the direction of Strauss. As a result, popular opinion has enduringly identified it with the Christmas season. In Act 2, the two children try to find their way out of a darkening forest and meet the Sandman, who makes them drowsy by placing grains of sand into their eyes. Before they fall asleep, they sing the celebrated Evening Prayer. In the dream pantomime which follows, a host of fourteen angels gather to watch over the slumbering children. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.1+EH.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp:Perc(2): Hp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Vocal Soli (3 roles S S MS).
