Bohuslav Martinu wrote the RHAPSODY-CONCERTO FOR VIOLA AND ORCHESTRA, H337, as a commission from the Ukrainian-American viola player Jascha Veissi. Composed in the spring of 1952, the concerto marks his final stylistic transition into neo-Romanticism. The work premiered on February 19, 1953, with Veissi as the soloist and George Szell conducting the Cleveland Orchestra. It has since become one of the most frequently performed viola concertos of the last century. Instrumentation: Solo Va: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp.Perc(1): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
