Description
Three Botticelli Pictures (Trittico Botticelliano or Boticelli Triptych) is a set of pieces by Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) meant to evoke three paintings by the painter Sandro Botticelli: “La Primavera (Spring),” “L’Adorazione dei Magi (The Adoration of the Magi)”, and “La nascita di Venere (The Birth of Venus).” Respighi dedicated the piece to prominent music patron Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. The second song, “The Adoration of the Magi,” is based on Botticelli’s depiction of the nativity. Respighi borrows from the Christmas songs “Veni, Veni Emanuel” and “Tu scende dalle stelle”.
