Description
The sublime Ave Verum Corpus, K. 618 was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) in June of 1791 for his friend Anton Stoll, and it premiered on June 23 of that year at St. Stephen’s church in Baden bei Wien, with Stoll at the organ. The transcendent and serene motet is perhaps the best-known setting of the short Catholic Eucharistic chant, and it was Mozart’s first effort at a sacred work since his unfinished Mass in C minor from 1781 while also being his final completed sacred prior to his Requiem, which remained unfinished at his death later that same year.
