Charles T. Griffes’ charming and sophisticated arrangement of Barcarolle (‘Belle nuit’) dates from ca 1910 and is as natural and idiomatic in Griffes’ piano version as it was in Offenbach’s original for orchestra. It is a composition that will be a fine addition to any pianist’s repertoire. Griffes, himself a gifted pianist, premiered the work as an encore in a concert at Elmira College, New York.
