Description
Battle of Doro Passage musically describes a real naval conflict of October 16, 1827 on the Aegean Sea. The British brig Comet was attacked by pirates in Doro Passage off the islands of Greece, but was retaken by a nearby American convoy who had rushed in to help. The opening “calm winds” hint at approaching danger, as each ship is introduced with its own powerful musical theme that rises, falls, and overlaps in conflict on the high seas. This is a strong teaching piece for hooked bowings, dotted quarter rhythms, and dynamic contrasts in familiar first position.
