Flute 1, Flute 2

Description

All of the pieces presented here were taken from 18th century clavier literature. The three pieces written by the French “clavier players” Couperin, Daquin, Rameau can only be played on a two-manual instrument, because both hands largely use the same tonal range. The Largo by Telemann was taken from the Fantasia in E major which belongs to a group of 36 Fantasies for harpsichord. Quite contrary to the French pieces, the two parts have opposite functions here: while the first part plays the melody, the second performs a figured bass-like accompaniment – a splitting of roles that can also be found in Bach’s Gavotte and Minuet from the Note Book for Anna Magdalena Bach. The two pieces composed by Haydn are movements from the piano sonatas. Except for Haydn’s Minuet, all pieces were transposed to adapt them to the tonal range of the flute.
