Description

The first performance of the Violin Concerto was at the University of Helsinki in February 1904, with the composer conducting. The premiere was met with mixed reviews, with some criticism of the virtuoso passages (and the inability of the performing violinist to keep up), and even that there were “too many musical ideas.” Sibelius made substantive changes, deleting some of the virtuosic passages and modifying the orchestration, in primarily the first and third movements, and the second edition has been performed since. Given the amount of interest in the early version, Robert Lienau is pleased to now present a new score for the early version, based on the 1905 complete edition “Jean Sibelius’ Works”, edited by Timo Virtanen. The early version is longer and even more virtuosic than the revised version of 1905. Performance materials are available on rental.
