Description
Zyman’s friendship with acclaimed harpist Mercedes Gomez began when both attended a composition workshop by Mario Lavista at the National Conservatory of Music years ago. This experience brought to Gomez a sincere appreciation for the works of contemporary Mexican composers and led to a commission for Zyman’s Concierto para Arpa (1994). Gomez assisted with the writing for the harp, premiered the work, and recorded it with Orchestra of the Americas on the album Samuel Zyman: 3 Conciertos. The three movements (of which the second is especially expressive) feature Zyman’s excellent orchestral scoring, in which the solo harp is never overpowered.
