Description

Janácek had a habit of revising his scores during preparations for first performances, but died before the first staging of From the House of the Dead. Well-intentioned students “finished” the work (including a “notorious happy ending”) for the premiere, but this has only made the editor’s job that much more difficult. John Tyrrell has now completed a massive undertaking to make consistent the full score and piano/vocal score for this final Janácek opera. The study score (400 pages!) has now joined the UE Study Score series, with complete history, background information, critical commentary, and more. A truly masterful production. Libretto by Janácek, after Dostoevsky’s “Memoirs from the House of the Dead”; English translation by David Pountney; edited by John Tyrrell with performance suggestions by Sir Charles Mackerras.
