Description
An important early composition by Castelnuovo-Tedesco is this patriotic war song from 1915 (words by his older brother Ugo). World War I was on the horizon, and this clarion call to arms urges Italian patriots to “crush Austria or don’t come back.” Ironically, Castelnuovo-Tedesco was later to leave Italy just before World War II, amidst the rise of racial laws which, among other things, banned his music from Italian radio. Italy’s loss was Hollywood’s gain, as Castelnuovo-Tedesco went on to score over 200 films.
