THE GYPSY BARON (DER ZIGEUNERBARON) is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) which premiered at the Theater an der Wien on October 24, 1885. Its libretto, penned by the author Ignaz Schnitzer, was based on the story Saffi by M�r J�kai. Set in 18th century Hungary, it tells the story of a gypsy girl who is discovered to be the daughter of a Turkish Pasha and the owner of a hidden fortune. In the Act I song OH, HABET ACH, the gypsy girl Saffi boasts of the unpredictable nature of her kind, describing them as “the children of the night” and warning that anyone they encounter should flee from them as quickly as possible.
