Bohuslav Martinu wrote the RHAPSODY-CONCERTO FOR VIOLA AND ORCHESTRA, H337, as a commission from the Ukrainian-American viola player Jascha Veissi. Composed in the spring of 1952, the concerto marks his final stylistic transition into neo-Romanticism. The work premiered on February 19, 1953, with Veissi as the soloist and George Szell conducting the Cleveland Orchestra.
