Description

Karl Höller (1907 – 1987) came from an old Franconian family of musicians. He made his first attempts at composition at the early age of 5. In the beginning, his father taught him how to play the organ, later on, he studied the subjects organ, composition and theory in Würzburg and Munich. He was a pupil of Joseph Haas. His professional career took him from Munich to the Frankfurt conservatory and finally back to Munich where he was President of the College of Music from 1954 to 1972. Above all, he composed instrumental works. He won international acclaim in 1932/33 with his work “Orchestral hymns”. The sonata presented here is dated 1943/44 and premi?red in 1947. It was thoroughly rearranged in 1973/74, and our edition is based on its final version.
