Description

A sense of color and a formal conciseness are the hallmarks of Dutilleux’s elegant musical language, which drew its inspiration from various twentieth-century trends. He was a demanding composer, surprisingly self-critical when it came to his own work: he destroyed most of his early pieces, sparing, among others, his Sonatine for flute and piano – a competition piece for the Paris Conservatoire in 1943 – because of its enormous success. Historical introduction and performing notes in French and English by the flutist Bruno Jouard.
