Description
The key to George Frideric Handel’s (1685-1759) genius lies in his operas and oratorios. Handel’s output of vocal compositions has established his greatness far more than the few organ concerti, sonatas, and harpsichord pieces he composed. To provide another instrumental example of the great master’s work, Leroy Anderson has made a transcription of one of the most beautiful of Handel’s arias. SONG OF JUPITER is the aria entitled “Where’ere You Walk,” which is sung by Jupiter in the oratorio SEMELE. One of the lesser known of Handel’s oratorios, SEMELE was written in London in 1743, the year following the first performance of Handel’s greatest musical achievement, THE MESSIAH. In SONG OF JUPITER we find a flowing melody of simple grandeur that is characteristic of Handel’s music.
