Even with an interruption for military service, the 1940s were a prolific time for Mennin. Three of his eight symphonies were composed in this decade, along with several instrumental and vocal works. The larger choral work The Christmas Story was completed in 1949. For mixed chorus, brass quartet, strings and timpani, the cantata runs 24 minutes. Performance materials are available on rental.
