Completed in 1916, the work premiered on March 11, 1917 at the Teatro Augusteo in Rome under the direction of Antonio Guarnieri. Originally, Arturo Toscanini had been scheduled to conduct, but had cancelled after provoking controversy over a program which had included Richard Wagner’s music amid the tense climate of World War I.
