Long points out that Clement’s most notable claim to fame today is as dedicatee for the Beethoven Violin Concerto, Op. 61, but he was a prodigious talent from an early age and his performances on violin were highly lauded. Clement is credited with a large number of compositions, primarily for violin, including as many as 25 concertinos and 6 concerti. Although Vienna was experiencing a growing love of guitar at the time, this set of Variations is the only known work by Clement that features guitar, even if it acts as accompaniment only to the solo violin. Long works faithfully with the original 1819 publication, making only corrections of obvious errors, and the solo violin part has been edited by Evelyn Moore. Now rediscovered, Clement’s set of seven Variations on a Viennese Theme can be a fresh challenge for this underserved pairing of instruments.
