Description
“Where Ya Bin?” is an up tempo Concert Bb Blues. Articulations are at a minimum, but if the players think “crisp” and “Count Basie” throughout when articulation the figures, the correct feel will be achieved. The melody is a 4 note cell that develops rhythmically. It’s best to start off slowly so the band will be able to get the figures. 99% of the chart has the same rhythms for everyone, so be mindful of keeping the figures “light and tight.” There are 2 open sections for solos with cues backgrounds in each. Two scales the cooperate well with the Bb Blues form would be Concert Bb Scale (Bb, Db, Eb, E, F, and Ab), and the Db Major Pentatonic Scale (Db, Eb, F, Ab, Bb). An effective way to use the Pentatonic Scale would be to start it on the 5th note, in this case Bb. The scale in Concert is (Bb, Db, Eb, F, Ab). By using Pentatonic this way the “bluesy” sound stays present.
