Za�s by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) was first performed on February 29, 1748 at the Op�ra in Paris. It is a pastorale h�ro�que, a form of the op�ra-ballet genre of French Baroque opera that draws subject material from pastoral poetry. Za�s tells the story of the genie Za�s, who disguises himself as a shepherd to win the love of Z�lide, a shepherdess. After proving he is willing to give up his magic powers for his love, Oromases, the king of genies, grants the couple immortality so that they might marry. Za�s is especially known for its spectacular and dramatic overture, which depicts the Palace of Oromases and his throne made from the four elements.
