Description
Four leading organizations (International Clarinet Association, International Double Reed Society, International Horn Society, and National Flute Association) joined together to bring about a mutual goal – to promote new works for the very ensemble that binds them together, the woodwind quintet. Once the details were ironed out, these organizations (together as The International Joint Wind Quintet Project) launched an international competition to find a new work for quintet. From the 76 compositions submitted, and through three rounds of judging, representatives of the four organizations proclaimed a winner – Lansing McLoskey’s Hardwood. Written as a theme and variations (although not actually variations on a given theme), the five-movement work was premiered at the 2012 meetings of all four organizations, and it is a stellar beginning to a hopefully long-running competition.
