Although traditional in this regard, the theme’s 8 bars include irregular meter changes and modal harmony, and the successive variations go refreshingly far afield from the original phrase. Passacaglia is also available for Trombone Quintet (4 Tenor, 1 Bass – 144-40608), and for large Brass Ensemble (4 Trumpets, 2 Horns, 2 Tenor Trombones, 1 Bass Trombone, and 1 Tuba – 144-40609).
