Description
Composed at the beginning of 2006 during a residency at the Conservatoire du XIV arrondissement in Paris, Sax Trip combines two major trends running through Thierry Esaich’s work: a strong interest in pedagogy, which prompted him quite early on to focus on making quality contemporary repertoire accessible to music students; and a predilection for the saxophone, originating in getting acquainted with top sax-players Claude Delangle, Jean-Pierre Baraglioli, Jean-Yves Fourmeau or Nicolas Prost, and in a personal affinity with the instrument’s rich, flexible timbre. A concertino in three movements (Allegro molto/Adagio/Vivace) after the fast/slow/fast pattern, Sax Trip makes no secret of its newclassical inspiration while revealing the composer’s determination to make his music accessible to young orchestra players. Esaich’s unique inspiration and virtuosic style transcend the deliberate formal and technical simplicity of the piece, and let the fundamentals shine through: the rhythmic energy, the trademark modal harmony, and the dramatic inspiration (most notably the long ascending line in the slow movement).
