Description

Tour de Trance by Arnulf Herrmann is a 35-minute work for orchestra with soprano in four movements. In the first movement “manische Episode” (manic Episode), which also exists as an independent piece, there is a strong impulse on the part of the composer, through the principle of continual transformation, to drive the piece further and to break up its clear purposefulness. As the work progresses, the listener hears microtonal pendulum movements and encounters distorted Beethoven quotations. The last movement sets a poem by Monika Rinck from which the work borrows its title.

The world premiere took place on 12 November 2021 at musica viva in Munich, with Anja Petersen (soprano) and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado.
